The Muline Olive Press (Mulinski tijesak) as well as the remains of the antique villa can be visited and explored all year round. The complex is located outdoors in the hamlet of Muline and it can be reached on foot, by bicycle or car.
In the picturesque hamlet of Muline, there are remains of a late-antique rustic villa from the 1st century. The villa used to comprise outbuildings and an olive processing plant. The classical antique villas were usually built as focal points of estates combining the luxurious living in the nature entrepreneurial activities.
The Muline olive press (Mulinski tijesak) was one of the strongest olive presses in the entire Mediterranean. The olive oil mill operated from the 1st to the 5th century, and the olive oil produced there was known as the Liburnian Oil (Oleum Liburnicum). It was the most valuable oil of the Roman Empire and even Marcus Gavius Apicius wrote about it in the 4th century. Other producers had a recipe for adulterating it because they did not know the secret of the genuine Liburnian Oil. Based on the calculations, it is assumed that as much as 702 tonnes of olives used to be processed in a season, from which some 58,000 litres of oil would be obtained. The tradition of the Liburnian Oil lives on today on the island.
