Monastery of St. Jerome (Mostir)

The monastery is open for visitors in the summer months during the doors open days. The monastery cloister is also used as a concert venue. The church is open during services.

Visit the church and monastery of St. Jerome on the island of Ugljan in the Mostir area because they are one of the most beautiful examples of the 15th century island architecture in Dalmatia, and they also served as a model for other buildings of that kind in the Zadar area at that period. Saint Jerome is known as the patron saint of Dalmatia. The church and the monastery were built in 1430 with the support of noble families from Zadar. This Ugljan pearl used to be taken care of by the Benja family from Zadar, a family known for its many intellectuals and priests. After its construction, the monastery belonged to the order of the Little Brothers of Jesus, and since 1933 it has been run by the congregation of the Daughters of Mercy. The monastery hides many valuable artefacts, and one of the most prominent being the Ugljan polyptych by Ivan Petrov – the most valuable Gothic painting of the Croatian Middle Ages. It is possible to visit the monastery during the summer, and in the 16th century cloister even concerts are held.
