The sand of time

The Sand of Time trail starts at the entrance to Božava, takes you through its center and continues further along the surrounding road by the coast and through the field all the way to the starting point.

From there you continue along the old path to the nearby village of Soline. Be very careful because the path is very narrow in some places. When you reach Soline you will come across another old road that takes you all the way to the world-famous sandy Sakarun bay.

The sand curse

230 years ago, a young man who lived on Dugi Otok fell in love with a beautiful girl from a neighboring village. He loved her and she loved him. They knew their parents would not approve of their love, so they met every night in a secluded spot surrounded by dry stone walls and ivy, under a large pine tree. They enjoyed spending time together and their love blossomed. But the news of their immeasurable love spread to the villages, and reached the girl’s father. The young man realized he had no choice but to turn to her father for a blessing. He came up to him and asked for the hand of his daughter, beautiful as Sakarun, the most beautiful beach in the world. Her father replied that he does not approve of their love and that he curses him for all time, and that he would get his daughter’s hand only if he counted all the grains of sand on Sakarun beach, knowing that it was impossible. But the young man’s love for the girl was so great that he went to the beach every night and started counting the grains of sand. He is still doing it today because the father’s curse does not allow the death of either the young man or the girl until all the grains are counted.
