The trail starts in the Hrnjetine quarry, opposite the island of Rava and follows a macadam road with a view of the open sea that leads all the way to the Strašna peć cave. By the Fairytale trail continues on somewhat more difficult and demanding terrain by climbing towards the Oštravica hill. From here it offers views far and wide in all directions. To the left, a goat path begins, which will take you to the opposite slope, through karst and occasional bushes, all the way to the starting point.
The cave fairies
Once upon a time, while Dugi otok was as long as it is today, and maybe even longer, it was inhabited by fairies. They flew from one end of the island to the other and sprinkled magic dust on it to make the island always beautiful. However, they did so during the night because if the sunlight touches their wings for only a second, it dries and destroys them, causing them to die. And those nights were beautiful, filled with the glitter of magical dust everywhere.
One day, the fairies agreed to divide the island into two parts, so that they could sprinkle one part one night and the other the other night, in order to make their task easier. They decided to divide it in its narrowest part. They dug and dug, but at dawn they were caught in the middle of the work. So, they remained forever trapped in the cave they dug, which is proof of the fairy’s intent. Only enough sunlight enters the cave that the fairies feel their skin burning, but not enough to kill them. That is why this cave is now known under the name Strašna peć (Scary Furnace).
