This trail on Dugi otok will show you all the beauties of the island and its diversity, from the sweet hills and untouched flora, through the beautiful coastline where the land and sea touch, to the imposing cliffs that arouse awe in everyone.
The trail requires a high level of experience (and dexterity), and is not intended for beginners. It starts from Sali and goes along the sea through Telašćica to Lake Mir, from where it rises to the imposing Dugi otok cliffs. The part along the cliffs is very demanding and takes place on rocky terrain, requiring dexterity and greater caution. This part has some of the most beautiful viewpoints on the trail, and in several parts you enter dense Mediterranean vegetation where the trail is covered with moss. Such frequent contrasts on the track are interesting. The trail passes by another island phenomenon – Lake Žman, which has fresh water. In the past, when more was involved in agriculture, when the lake level would rise, the islanders would pick grapes from small boats. From Lake Žman, after several ascents and descents, you reach Žman, a picturesque village. From Žman, the path leads all the way along the sea, all the way to Sali.
ŠTRIGE
From the beginning, since the time of the human race, Štrige, a local name for hags, have existed in almost every village. These were women who, either by their own will or by the force of circumstances and adversity in life, came into contact with something from the “other side”, from where they received supernatural powers, but had to sacrifice what is most valuable to themselves in return.
They are usually old women, but it is not the rule. Štrige still exist today. There is a suspicion for many women that they are Štrige, but this is difficult to prove as they conceal their powers very skillfully and can cast spells on men from a great distance. Just a small insult is enough for them to turn your life into hell. Just saying their name out loud can be a reason for revenge, which is why people never do it.
If an old woman yells at you along the way, don’t fight back. Who knows, maybe she’s Štriga.
