Dugi otok is the largest island in the northern Dalmatia. The coast of Dugi otok facing the open sea is characterised by sharp contrasts: the part that is located in the Telašćica Nature Park, the most beautiful and the largest natural harbour in the Adriatic Sea, is mostly steep and dominated by magnificent cliffs, whereas the south-west side is rich with coves and there is also the famous sandy beach called Sakarun. Dugi otok, often nicknamed “island of contrasts” because of its diversity, takes its visitors on a “journey” through tradition and the modern world while nurturing its peculiarities and attractions that make it different from other islands. First of all, it is a place of relaxation and pleasure. During the summer months, festivities are held in each of the 12 villages of Dugi otok. They are usually patronal feasts, i.e. Feasts dedicated to the patron saints, accompanied and celebrated with sounds of local music and traditional dishes. The most famous of them is the feast called Saljske užance. Those who prefer active vacations here have the opportunity to explore the island following the well-tended and marked hiking and cycling trails, visit marked archaeological sites (from “the oldest Dalmatian – Šime”, who lived 11,000 years BC, via tumuli, Illyrian graves, Villa Rustica and caves to rocks formed about 100 million years ago) or go on trips to Telašćica Nature Park and Kornati National Park. During the year, various sports events are organised on Dugi otok, and the island is rich with hiking trails, tended paths dedicated to medicinal plants and there is also a climbing site. Additionally, there are several diving schools on Dugi otok that welcome anyone who wants to dive into the mysterious sea depths. They take the participants of their diving courses to visit some of the most attractive diving locations on Dugi otok, such as Brbišćica, the underwater cave, or the islet of Mežanj.
Dugi otok and its many tourist attractions and natural beauties offer visitors a journey through the world of tradition and modern way of living.
