Strašna peć cave

Fairies and mystical creatures have always been associated with hidden and secret places.

So, once upon a time on Dugi otok, when the island was as long as it is today, perhaps even longer, it was the fairies who agreed to split it into two parts at its narrowest point. They dug and dug diligently, but the new dawn came before they finished their work and they were trapped in a cave. So, this is the legend of how Strašna peć cave was created as a proof of the intention of the fairies.

The cave is located on Dugi otok, near the Telašćica Nature Park in the vicinity of the village of Savar. A walk through the cave begins at its monumental entrance which is 10 meters wide and 7 meters high at an altitude of 70 meters.

After entering the cave, the path leads you through a channel that first descends gently and then steeply to the bottom of the cave. While walking around the cave, you will enjoy the view of the fused stalactites and stalagmites. They look like the nature played here with them and “painted” the space like the vaults of Gothic basilicas. After the picturesque first hall and observing the play of light that penetrates into the cave, you will reach the second part, which exudes exciting splendour, and the entire cave feels so romantic.

The calmness and harmony of the island’s landscape in symbiosis with the blue sea and the beauty of the Strašna peć offer you incredible experience that you will never forget!
