The St. Michael’s Fortress was built on the place of an ancient fortress from the 6th century and a 12th century Benedictine monastery and a church of St Michael. The medieval fortress of St. Michael is located at an important strategic point for maritime surveillance in the Zadar water area. The fortress was fully built by the middle of the 14th century and it played a significant historical role in the conflicts between Zadar and Venice as well as a crucial role when it comes to the defence of Zadar. The fight for the fortress was almost impossible because of the high cliffs on which it is located. Proof of this is the fight between Zadar and Venetian army that took place on 27 September 1345, in which 150 local people from Ugljan managed to fight back against 500 Venetian soldiers.

After the sale of Dalmatia to the Republic of Venice, the fortress began to deteriorate. It suffered additional damage during the World War II when it was bombed. Today, it is a favourite place of local people and numerous visitors. It is a point that offers you a stunning view of the entire Zadar region.

Visits to the fortress are possible throughout the year and it is open to all visitors. The fortress can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car. The route to the fortress starts in Preko, and on the way up you will be able to enjoy many picturesque vistas and a walk through olive groves.
