Sestrunj is a very unusual island that looks as a mountain rising up from the sea. Forests cover 80 percent of its surface, and the position of the village, at the top of the hill, has been preserved as in the ancient times. This position offers the unforgettable view of the Zadar Archipelago. The sea aroundSestrunj is rich in fish, and some of the best catches of fish in the Adriatic have been recorded here. When on the island, you should visit the Church of Our Lady of Health (Gospe od zdravlja), and take part in the feast of St. Peter, the patron saint of the village. The main bay on the island is Kablin and it features a mill – an oil mill. Explore Sestrunj and its natural beauty, by visiting the four bays of Sestrunj: Triluke, Hrvatinj, Kablin and Muline, and then continue your walk along the paths of this fragrant island. Do not miss the main Sestrunj feasts – Sestrunjska noć and Šulicada! The last Saturday in July is reserved for children’s games in Kablin, the main port of Sestrunj. Šulicada is a unique summer game for both young and old played on Sestrunj. It is a game of agility, tactics and speed played in the water and on the land. Sestrunj offers the originality of an island and the traditional way of life. Visitor with an adventurous spirit can still explore the abandoned Sestrunj castles, the Sestrunj coast and submarine area, while those who want peace should indulge in the charm of the island. As early as the 10th century BC, the island was inhabited by the Liburnians. You can visit their tumuli and two dry stone fortifications situated on Gračina and Gračinica. Sestrunj was also inhabited by the ancient Romans who exploited Sestrunj stone. Did you know that Sestrunj was owned by the Zadar noble families? However, the brave people of Sestrunj fought against such a relationship because they were obliged to give crops, cattle and fish to the owner of the island. It wasn’t until 1904, that the inhabitants bought the island from the noble Borelli family. Since there are no water wells on the island, the inhabitants had to rely on the rainwater that was collected in reservoirs.
