Stara kava

On Dugi otok, between the towns of Luka and Savar, right next to the long-distance “highway” that connects the north and south of the island, there is the “Stara Kava” sports climbing area. The climbing area was arranged and opened in 2012 by the Sports Climbing Section of the Paklenica PD in the framework of an old inactive quarry, and in 2024 the members of the Paklenica Sports Climbing Club rehabilitate the existing routes and add 4 new climbing routes, both times in cooperation with the Sali Tourist Board.

It is a relatively low limestone rock with a height of up to 11 m, which is of poor quality in some places, therefore, as always, caution is recommended when climbing and the use of protective helmets. The rock is oriented to the northeast, which means that even in summer in the middle of the day you can find some shade, but the most favorable period for climbing is from autumn to winter. It is relatively protected from the south while it is exposed to the north-west wind. The directions are surprisingly diverse considering that it is a quarry, and mostly vertical or slightly inclined slabs and shelves prevail. The courses are suitable primarily for beginners and recreational players, although there are also two more demanding courses in the 7-level range. There are currently 13 routes of difficulty from 4a to 7a, with an average height of about 8m. Access to the climbing area itself is very simple – parking is in the immediate vicinity of the climbing area, by the road.

The climbing area has a very pleasant and pleasant atmosphere, a large pine tree in the middle of the quarry provides shelter from the sun in the summer months, and the climbing area offers a wonderful view of the island of Rava and the surrounding islands of the Zadar archipelago. Somewhat south of the climbing area, there is another quarry from where the marked path to Orljak peak begins, the ascent to which takes about 1 hour, and from which there is an impressive view on all sides – towards the Zadar archipelago on one side and the open sea on the other.
