Dry Stone Huts and Dry Stone Walls

A dry stone hut (bunja) – a hut built using a method by which structures are constructed from stones without any mortar to bind them together. Dry stone huts were used as toolsheds or temporary shelters from adverse weather conditions (either storms or strong sun) for people working in fields or tending cattle. The dry stone huts can be found in the farming area of the island. This unique historical landscape that represents the dry stone heritage of the island of Ugljan has been present here for more than 4,000 years, from the Bronze Age to the present day. The art of building dry stone walls was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage of Humanity list and it can be seen all over the island.
