The water scarcity was one of the main issues that the population of Preko dealt with in the past. They used to dig cisterns (public or private), wells and puddles. Before the water supply network was introduced, the cisterns had been the main source of drinking water. Veliki Stonovac is a large public cistern and it used to supply water to Preko. It is located above the central part of the village and it is the size of a football pitch, 70 m long and 40 m wide. The underground tanks can accumulate as much as 150,000 litres of rainwater. Women of Preko used to carry the water from Stonovac home in containers on their heads, or donkeys carried barrels of water on their backs.
On the pier in the centre of Preko, there is still a public tap (špina) that is the source of refreshment for many. Špina was installed in 1930, and the water from Stonovac flowed through the dug canals straight to this focal point in the village. Take a walk to Stonovac because a fantastic viewpoint awaits you there.
