Ist

Ist is one of the typical, small and sparsely populated islands of the Zadar Archipelago. Being only 20 nautical miles away from Zadar, it stretches out over only 9 km². It is much smaller than some other island destinations, but still its indented coast and hidden bays offer many opportunities for exploration and relaxation. There is only one village on Iž and it bears the same name, Ist. The island of Ist has a long and stormy past full of intriguing legends. It has an interesting butterfly shape dominated by two deep bays, Široka on the southern side, and Kosirača on the north-western side. The peaceful village of Ist spreads out between those two sandy bays and has become, just as the entire island, a paradise and a safe harbour for sailors in the past fifty years. Located near the coast of the northern Dalmatia, the island of Ist delights visitors with its undisturbed nature, clear waters and traditional Mediterranean charm. Although it is not among the largest islands in the region, Ist radiates its unique energy.

Ist is proud of its rich history and cultural heritage that spans through centuries. It was first mentioned at the beginning of the 14th century, and since the 1920s it has had the largest navy in Dalmatia. It is also the birthplace of Dina Levačić, the first Croatian woman to swim across the English Channel.

The waters around the island of Ist are rich with fish, which attracts sport fishermen. The submarine area around the island is no less interesting, which is well known to experienced divers. There are boat anchorages in the Mljake bay, and guests are offered accommodation in private houses and apartments. This small, peaceful island with the population of barely 250 people is a suitable destination for lovers of quiet and somewhat secluded holidays close to nature. They can enjoy either the hilly interior of the island with vineyards and olive groves, or the neighbouring islands of Molat and Škarda, sandy beaches, coves and shoals. There is also plenty of opportunities for sport fishing.

Ist also hosts many traditional events, such as summer fiestas and fishing festivals, where visitors can experience local culture and gastronomy. It is also known for its basketball tournament and swimming marathon. Ist is a paradise for nature and adventure lovers – diving, snorkelling, cycling or simply relaxing on beautiful beaches are just some of the activities offered on Ist. Visitors also enjoy fresh fish, traditional Dalmatian dishes and excellent wines, which are an integral part of the rich Mediterranean culinary heritage. Enjoy the charm of the island of Ist!
